The Sirens
The Sirens are supernatural beings often portrayed as part woman, part sea creature. They are supernatural beings and possess supernatural voices, capable of reaching great distances across the sea. They are known for their irresistibly beautiful and enchanting song that lures sailors to shipwreck. They live on an island called Anthemoessa, which is surrounded by jagged rocks, the wreckage of ships, and the bones of those that succumb to their music.
In The Odyssey, an epic poem about Odysseus’ return from Troy, the Sirens are one of the dangers Odysseus must pass on his journey home from Troy. Circe explicitly instructs Odysseus that no man can resist the siren’s song, and every man will steer toward them. Following her advice, he prepared his crew. She advised the sailors to plug their ears with beeswax. Odysseus melted beeswax and distributed it to his sailors, carefully ensuring each one plugged his ears tightly.
Odysseus, curious to hear the Siren’s song, ordered his men to tie him tightly to the ship’s mast. Under the threat of punishment, he commanded his men not to release him, no matter what he says. The men agreed, and they sailed toward Anthemoessa.
As the ship drew near, the seas fell unnaturally still. A haunting melody drifted across the water. The Sirens calledx out to Odysseus specifically, offering to reveal the secrets of the Trojan War (in which he fought), the histories of all mankind, and knowledge that could elevate him above all other mortals.
Odysseus struggled, and begged to be released, enthralled by their voices. But the crew followed his earlier orders and kept him restrained. The ship sailed safely forward, past the danger. When the crew was safe and out of range, the crew removed the beeswax and untied Odysseus. They succeeded, relying on discipline, preparation and teamwork. This myth reinforces Odysseus’ blend of curiosity and cunning, as well as his ability to resist allure. This journey continues toward home with the Sirens left behind, an obstacle survived and a lesson learned.
